A question which is frequently asked is which dishwasher is the best. I wish I could answer this question but the truth of the matter is that there isn’t one! Every dishwasher is different, and it will suit certain people better than it would suit others. When modernizing a kitchen it is becoming increasingly common to opt for an integrated dishwasher. There are a large variety of sizes and models on the market these days, from huge beasts that cater for large families, to ultra-slim 35cm integrated dishwasher models. No matter what size your kitchen is, you will be able to find a dishwasher that fits. Before making a purchasing decision, however, it is a good idea to understand what capacity you really require. There is no point in taking up more space than necessary, particularly if your kitchen unit real estate is minimal.

Here’s a list of the various types and sizes of integrated dishwashers available:

  • Full size integrated dishwasher: The largest type available, you should be able to fit the equivalent of 12 dinner sets. This means mean 12 times of each item that would be used in a 3 course meal – 12 dinner plates, 12 bowls, 12 dessert plates, 12 glasses, and 12 cutlery sets! As you can see, a full size washer can hold a LOT of items, and most families it is overkill. Full size means 60 cm.
  • Slim integrated dishwasher: These measure 45cm wide. They can hold the equivalent of 9 serving sets, which is just about right for an average family of 4-5 people. Once you start adding in frying pans, pots, and pans the remaining spaces will soon be filled!

  • Compact integrated dishwasher: These tiny dishwashers measure just 35cm across, but they can be quite tricky to find – IKEA is a good place to look if you can’t find any online. They hold about the equivalent of 4 serving places. These are the ones to hunt down if you have a tiny kitchen.

When choosing between an integrated and semi integrated model, try to decide beforehand what kind of look you want for your kitchen. There is a near endless supply of panels that can be mounted on the front of your integrated dishwasher – white panels, black wood effect, and so on. These look great and complement the kitchen perfectly. However, be aware obtaining a replacement panel might be difficult should it become damaged or scraped at a later date. If you have young kids in your home, a semi integrated model will be a lot more robust.

No matter type you decide on, if you are looking for the cheapest integrated dishwashers try to search online at sites like Amazon for good deals. Whatever type you eventually decide on, you can be sure that the amount of time it saves you is priceless in itself.

Integrated Dishwashers: Care And Cleaning

The common kitchen dishwasher is a fantastic machine, a star performer among kitchen appliances. Transforming the tedious task of washing dishware into a 5 minute load-and-forget procedure, an integrated dishwasher will clean for many years of loyal service. However, did you know that machine itself requires cleaning on occasion too? Food, debris and lime-scale can build up over time, reducing the overall performance of the machine. Luckily, you won’t have to clean your dishwasher very often, and it’s very simple indeed to do. Here’s what to check:

  • Dishwasher arms: Check the arms of the dishwasher for hanging food and debris. Once you have got rid of obvious bits of debris, take a toothpick and gently insert it into each of the arm’s nozzles to unblock anything stuck. This can take a little bit of time to perform, but it should improve the dishwasher’s cleaning power once completed.
  • Dishwasher Drain: At the bottom your appliance, be it a full size dishwasher or a 45cm integrated dishwasher, you will find a large drainage hole that is normally covered in wire mesh. Small particles such as dirty and gravel can penetrate the mesh if they are small enough. To clean the drain, remove the fastening mechanism (sometimes screws), and inspect it for debris. It is a good idea to check this at least once a year.

  • Dishwasher panel: As you open the door have a look at the side and bottom edges. Most dishwashers do not clean these places thoroughly, so if there are any marks or dirt give these edges a quick wipe.
  • Lime scale cleaning: Depending on the area that you live in, you may have lime-scale deposits. If your area has soft water supplies you should be fine. You can tell if your dishwasher is affected by tell-tale white scale buildup around the nozzles. If your washer is suffering, take a cup half filled with lemon juice and place it on the top rack. Run a short cycle (about 30 minutes) to clean up the lime-scale. Problem solved!

Cleaning your dishwasher doesn’t need to be done all that frequently, but if you notice that the quality of wash is not what it used to be then it may be time to begin. All of the above steps can be used no matter if you have a slim integrated dishwasher or a full size one, and it only takes 20 minutes a year to keep its performance as good as it has always been!
